My Social Justice Issue Project
This page is dedicated to my senior project, which involved creating a podcast, video, and an article, that highlight a social justice issue related to the COVID-19 global pandemic. Like many others, I picked up a new hobby during this time; mine was roller skating! My project centers on minority groups, including women, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and people of color (POC), examining how they have embraced hobbies like roller skating to cope with societal pressures and the challenges brought on by the pandemic.
This article is about women of color having that welcoming feeling in skate communities formed by other women. It specifically talks about a very important figure in my life and her upbringing. This article not only highlights individuals picking up new hobbies, but it also emphasizes a safe space that offers inclusivity.
In this podcast, co-founders Alexa “Pao” and Vicky, discuss their experience starting their rollerskate community Queer Skate Memphis, during the pandemic. Their passion for park skating has grown and it has motivated others to join their community. They allow skaters of all wheels and levels to participate in their skate meetups.
In this video, you will be informed on The Black Skaters United skate community that started in the state of Kentucky, in the late ‘90s. Co-founder Doug Williams talks about his experience as an aggressive inline skater. His goal is to continue welcoming individuals from different backgrounds, willing to skate. He encourages beginners to start their own skate community, especially while being in a pandemic.
